Flight was fine (except for the maximum-seat-reclining man with bronchitis in front of me), weather is fabulous, first hotel was not. There's just no "converting" a smoking room to a non-smoking room, and the efforts of the staff to do so only gave me a splitting headache and a sore throat. Plus, the room was just plain gross. It was so gross that the grossness trumped (read: bitch-slapped) the cheapness of the room and I just had to get out of there.

Now in a cute little vacation rental! Too bad it is only available for 5 out of the 7 nights I'll be here, but I did get a fabulous rate on (what should be) a really nice hotel for the last two nights. A little more than was planned for lodging but I don't feel like I'll be needing some serious decontamination when I lay down on the bed.

So, yay! First "real" day of vacation is about to commence. Whee!

Note to my Chicago peeps: in the Hemispheres magazine I read that on Saturday nights from 9pm to 11pm, the Ritz-Carlton in Chicago has a Cupcake Buffet with a bunch of fancy-schmancy cupcakes (e.g. coconut tres leches; a double-decker Boston cream pie; and a hazelnut praline) for $18. I say we confirm that this is still happening and go forth to sample this miracle for ourselves! Who's with me?
