One Girl Revolution
Sep. 3rd, 2002 11:30 pmI saw Margaret Cho's new movie, "Notorious C.H.O." tonight. Damn, that woman is funny. My friend and I were laughing heartily, along with everyone else in the theater. If you have a chance to see it, you should.
One of the things she talked about was how having self-esteem when you're a minority of race, gender, sexuality, size, etc., is a political act. That if the images in the media make you feel bad about yourself, make you doubt your authentic self, if you feel like you're too fat or not the right skin color - then it ends up coloring all other areas of your life: makes you hesitate when asking for a raise, hesitate to defend yourself when someone insults you, and makes you feel like you are inadequate and unworthy of your rights, etc. Having self-esteem when you are a minority is revolutionary...and the revolution is one that is long overdue.
I like that message. It gives all of us personal power in equal measure.
