What happened? My Tivo didn't change channels correctly, so I didn't record it.

Clay sang "Everlasting Love" and he did well - nothing new, really, but he's got a great voice. Randy, Paula, and the guest judge - Verdine White from Earth, Wind, and Fire - all loved the performance, as did the audience. Then Simon told him that it was terrible. (He may have said something else too, I didn't want to rewatch it just to get his comments.)

Sure, I can see that Simon may be looking for more from Clay - we already know that he can sing. And yes, Clay may not sound like Simon's ideal "American Idol." But Simon was really damn surly about it tonight, especially after practically kissing Carmen's ass about her performance. (He told her that she's the most commercially marketable of the female singers left in the competition, amongst other things.)

Simon is trying to save face with Carmen. He picked her, so he's got to back her up. Or she's blackmailing him. *g*

I must admit that I don't love Clay like everybody else does -- he's good, but he's not right for this competition IMO.

I agree, for the most part. Clay has been reminding me of Sam Harris, when Sam won the first season of Star Search...they've both got great singing voices that aren't pop voices.

Which is why I can kind of understand why Simon may be being so hard on Clay - to try to push Clay beyond his normal comfort zone to see what else he can deliver. It's the way Simon is so pissy with Clay (seemingly more than with anyone else) that bugs me.

And don't get me wrong - I'm all for Simon's straight-shooting criticism. These folks want to be stars? They're going to hear much worse and need to develop a thick skin. Simon just sounds *extra* Simon-like with Clay.

Actually, though this groups seems much better than the last one, I'm just not excited about any of them. Of course, that could be because Fox has been milking the show as much as they can, and that gets in the way of my enjoyment. C'mon, the 30 minute reveal show was dragged out to start with...and now it's an hour? Ridiculous.

As far as I can tell, Simon thinks he's ugly, and doesn't like Clay's sound. I also think Simon likes drama and controversy, and he knows people think Clay has an amazing voice and has a million screaming fangirls, so he was exaggerating. Because Carmen is a trainwreck and she's "really marketable", but Clay sings like THAT and he's "terrible"? Please. I think Clay actually responded very intelligently.

I agree with Mei that he's not exactly Pop Idol material, but I want Clay to win because there's NO WAY 19 would offer him a record contract if he didn't. Ruben's got a deal waiting for him no matter what. Ya know?
