We've Found A Life On The Highway
Nov. 8th, 2002 03:10 pmMovin' Right Along! Anyone interested in a dining room table, some wingback chairs, an Ikea cabinet with glass door, and some other miscellaneous household stuff? I ask because I just found out a couple of days ago that Mr. Dis (and myself, of course) are being transferred to Denver.
I've known that this was likely for the last few months, so it's not a total shock. But there was disconcerting moment when we finally got the word that yes, we are leaving Chicago. In the space of about 3 seconds, my feelings ran the gamut from "ah, at last we finally have a time-frame" to "oh shit, there's so much to do" to "dammit, is this going to screw up our already-made travel plans for the rest of November and December?" to "Oh no, I'm going to be leaving all my TWoP Chicago friends and all my favorite restaurants."
Mr. Dis and I have moved 3 times in the 6 years he's been with his company; for a long while each time he got a promotion, it meant a move. Plus, with each of Mr. Dis' new promotions it has meant that he has to spend more time at work, usually traveling back and forth to the new city as part of transitioning to his new role in the company. I'm positive this time will be the same, so I'm essentially going to be doing this all by myself.
As a result of all our moving around, I am fairly good at moving. But I hate doing it. And to make it a bit more fun, this is the first move in a long time where we've had to sell our house instead of just leaving a rented place. So now there's also the press to get the painting done, take care of the little house repairs that are still undone, and to clean out the closets and drawers (to make an impression of "spaciousness" in the minds of potential buyers). Which kind of makes it like two moves: one move of the stuff we won't need immediately to a storage space, and then the real move later to Denver.
Needless to say, my brain has been abuzz with lists of things to do and worrying about stuff. As a champion worrier, news of the move bumped my worry level to a new high. Each day so far has found me vacillating between cool confidence and utter panic. Guess this is a good time to prove to myself just exactly how much I can handle. Also a good time to teach myself to be better about accepting change. It's not that I'm a person who wants to stay in the same routine all the time; just that my immediate reaction tends to be "crap" rather than "whee!" when faced with a big change like this. It just takes me a little while to wrap my brain around everything and remind myself that life is an adventure.
By the way, we'll be putting our house on the market at the beginning of January. (Thankfully, the impending holiday season gives me a bit more time to get things ready.) So if you know of anyone looking to buy a great place in Chicago around that time, let me know, okay?
Besides all that, today was the day of my Totally Hands-On Pie making class. The classes I'm taking are at a cool old Victorian-ish house that has been transformed into a retail store by a woman who used to be a pastry chef. Tired of the restaurant business, she opened this place and she and 3 other chefs offer classes. It's fun, and the atmosphere is cozy and friendly. So the chef taught us how to make pie dough and then we got to taste the apple-cranberry and chocolate pecan pies that she had already prepared. Then we went over the 3 pie recipes (the other pie recipe was Sweet Potato) and we got to choose which one pie we wanted to make right there in class to take home to bake.
Being a lazy woman, I opted out of the apple-cranberry pie; too much peeling and slicing had to happen there. And the chocolate pecan was good, but pecan isn't my favorite, so I chose the sweet potato. It's going into the oven in just a few minutes. Whee!?
Ooh, ooh, I almost forgot! I'm totally excited about my Amazon order that just arrived today. My new purchase is the "The Muppet Show 25th Anniversary Collection: Music, Mayhem, and More!" CD. It's chock full of 27 great songs and show bits that take me back to my childhood. I love it. I rilly rilly do.
In honor of that, I'm also including the words to the Muppet song "Movin' Right Along".
Movin' right along in search of good times and good news,
With good friends you can't lose,
This could become a habit!
Opportunity knocks once let's reach out and grab it (yeah!),
Together we'll nab it,
We'll hitchhike, bus or yellow cab it!
(Cab it?)
Movin' right along.
Footloose and fancy-free.
Getting there is half the fun; come share it with me.
Moving right along (doog-a-doon doog-a-doon).
We'll learn to share the load.
We don't need a map to keep this show on the road.
(Hey, that song is sounding better Fozzie.)
Movin' right along,
We've found a life on the highway.
And your way is my way,
So trust my navigation.
California here we come, the pie-in-the-sky-land.
Palm trees, and warm sand.
Though sadly we just left Rhode Island.
(We did what?!)
(Just forget it.)
Movin' right along (doog-a-doon doog-a-doon).
Hey LA, where've you gone?
Send someone to fetch us, were in Sasketchewan!
Movin' right along (doog-a-doon doog-a-doon).
You take it, you know best.
Hey, I've never seen the sun come up in the West?
Movin' right along.
We're truly birds of a feather,
We're in this together and we know where we're going.
Movie stars with flashy cars and life with the top down.
We're storming the big town,
(Yeah, Storm is right should it be snowing?)
(Uh, no I don't think so...)
Movin' right along,
Do I see signs of men?
Yeah, "welcome" on the same post that says "come back again."
Moving right along, nice town!
Footloose and fancy-free,
You're ready for the big time...
Is it ready for me?
Movin' right along,
Movin' right along,
Movin' right along,
Movin' right along.

Date: 2002-11-08 06:23 pm (UTC)Hee. Good idea. Though I'm pretty good at finding excuses not to exercise. For example, I can't find the combo lock I had for the gym lockers...and goodness knows I can't exercise without being able to lock up my other stuff.
What? The store will have more locks? Huh?
