I just saw this on SeriousEats.com:

"Oh, the crazy, tasty things kids do these days. Albany, New Zealand-based gelato maker James Oliver of Zest Gelato is only 22 years old, but his unconventional flavors are already making a mark. His bacon-and-egg-flavored ice cream won a silver medal at this year's New Zealand Ice Cream Awards, while his manuka honey gelato and his toasted coconut, lime, and mascarpone ice cream both grabbed golds. He also won a silver medal for his poached pear and blue cheese ice cream, which contains pears Oliver poaches himself and chunks of blue cheese. This is not your father's French vanilla."

Someone tell me about the bacon and egg ice cream, please!

I hadn't seen it but it doesn't surprise me - people have been doing savoury-type icecreams for a while now. I know someone does wasabi icecream, not that I've tasted it. I suspect it's not widely commercially available. Albany is in Auckland, he probably has a small outlet there.

Of course I wouldn't eat it because of the bacon aspect, but I'd go nuts for the others - they sound YUMMY.

Right, I've had savory ice cream before (the olive oil flavor was strange) but these sound yummy. The pear and blue cheese one catches my fancy as much as the bacon and egg flavor.

Since I know nothing much about NZ, how far is Auckland from where you are?

Uh, a long way. I'm in a different island. You can fly there in about 1 hour 20, so it doesn't seem like a long way, but you have to cross water and if you did it by road you'd be looking at a day and a half, couple of days of driving pretty hard, I guess.

Gotcha. I just looked at a map of NZ again (it's been a while) so now I have a better idea. Thanks!

I'd totally be game for the marscarpone ice cream. That sounds fantastic.

Bacon and egg? Not so much.

Ooh, I can't wait for your report. For scientific purposes, of course.

Oh wow. The cocnut, lime, mascarpone would be dangerous. I would eat till I puked. mmmmm...

There was a gelateria at The Taste this year with a mascarpone gelato. It was fabulous. Kinda tangy. They called it their "cheese cake" flavor. It was pretty close. The gelato place by my apartment is good, but has pretty "normal" flavors.

I really like bacon, but I think the idea of bacon and egg ice cream skeeves me a bit. I think it might be more the egg part though...
