Going Postal
Feb. 18th, 2003 03:33 pmBetween the parcels I send to my out-of-state MK customers, the goodies I send to my friends, and the stuff I order online and then decide to return, I'm at the post office frequently.
Lately I've been noticing a trend that irritates me. Here's what bothers me: I'll be in line behind people who clearly aren't ready to mail their packages. They'll have piles of unboxed stuff, no packing material or tape, no labels, and none of the certified/delivery confirmation/customs, etc., paperwork filled out before they get to the clerk at the counter.
Sure, some of that can be taken care of with the Priority mail boxes that are supplied by the Post Office. Unfortunately, my urban post office doesn't like to put those out in the lobby, so customers are forced to get them at the counter.
But there are lots of labels and whatever forms you need for what you're mailing out (and pens tied down to the counter to fill them out with)...and yet, people don't seem to see them.
All of this unpreparedness results in the clerks having to spend extra time explaining to the customer how to package their goodies (incredibly, I've even seen some people who seem to think that the postal clerks are there to pack the stuff for the customer). Which means more time I have to spend in line.
Haven't these people ever heard of Mail Boxes Etc. or PakMail - places where you can pay them to box and send your stuff? And where, incidentally, the line usually is way shorter than the line at the post office? You, you with the four shopping bags and the PDA...go there. They'll get your packages ready, the people behind the counter are usually more pleasant, and you'll save everyone a bunch of time.
(Why don't I go to MBE or to PakMail? Well, because I have all the supplies I need already and bring my parcels to the Post Office ready to go. I don't need to pay extra for their services.)
Meh, I'm probably the only one bothered by this, right? No doubt it's because I worked at the campus post office for 3 years in college, so I feel for the clerks and the customers who come prepared and then are stuck behind the unprepared people.
Attention Florida friends - thank you for answering my poll! I'm pricing out flights for the last weekend in March. Anyone know how to find out if Smallville will be showing new eppies on the Tuesdays before or after that weekend? Simply because it seems like being there for a Tuesday night SV/Buffy party would be more fun if the eppies were new.

Such a crime we commit. Perhaps we should be put to death for our lack of postal saavy?
:P So I take up other people's valuable time. You wanna make something of it?
