Perhaps it's good that I waited until after last night's Smallville to make my sword for my Halloween costume. Now I'll have visions of Lex caressing his Kurosawa prop sword and cricking his neck to inspire me.
Which reminds me, if anyone has any tips about making a cardboard sword, feel free to leave me a comment about it. This is the first time I'll be attempting it and I have a few (hopefully) kick-ass design ideas - I'm just hoping they translate well on cardboard.
ETA - after weighing myself this morning, I've lost nearly eighteen (18!!!) pounds. Woo! That's pretty exciting, considering all the birthday cake I've eaten recently.

As for the sword, I put one together. Though it may not be the best, I love it because it's mine.

Date: 2003-10-23 11:38 pm (UTC)Heh, was going to make some sort of joke about wrapping my puppy in tin foil but am feeling too tired to be clever. But I did get the sword made. Tomorrow - cookies!

Date: 2003-10-23 11:00 am (UTC)I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to wear for Halloween. *whimper* I'd better make up my mind soon or it's seriously going to be a shitty costume. Heh.
My only suggestion regarding the sword. We use to make quite a few for props back when I was in school (my principal was obsessed with productions) and we always found that they always end up bent (it could be that the boys couldn't resist having mock fights). If you can, it's better to make it from wood. You can actually find pretty light wood just by looking around the home improvement stores. And if you flirt with the staff, they might even just give you some spare bits that they have for free. ;)

Date: 2003-10-23 12:33 pm (UTC)Also, cardboard swordness. Make sure your cardboard is fairly rigid (heh). If it's kind of floppy, glue 2 pieces of cardboard together. Spasticat's comment about tinfoil is very wise. It makes is verrah shiny.

Date: 2003-10-23 11:45 pm (UTC)Thank you for the advice on the sword. I had thought about cutting out two of them to glue together, but lazy-assed out and only cut out one sword. I did cut out two extra handles and taped them all together to get a bit more raised surface on the pommel (or whatever it's called). Plus I reinforced the "blade" with packing tape before I put on the foil covering.
It's fun to swish around in a manly fashion (would that be "swash"?) and brandish one's sword; I can see why Lex does that a lot on SV.
